Periowave™

Periowave™ is a painless, non-invasive procedure that can significantly improve treatment outcomes when added to scaling and root planing (SRP). Using a powerful process known as photodisinfection, it inactivates many of the bacteria and toxins that SRP leaves behind.

Periowave™ is a non-antibiotic therapy that, unlike antibiotics, quickly destroys gram negative bacteria without promoting the development of bacterial resistance. Periowave™ does not exhibit many of the issues commonly associated with antibiotics, such as allergic or sensitivity reactions, opportunistic infections such as oral yeast infections, or the requirement to take prolonged doses of medication. As Periowave™ utilizes a cold (non-thermal), low-power diode laser as the activating light, it does not cause damage to root surfaces or surrounding tissues. There is no heat involved in this process.

What to Expect in the Clinic:

Periowave photodisinfection technologyQuick, easy to administer, painless, and effective, Periowave™ offers an experience unlike any other in periodontal therapy.

Periowave™ photodisinfection is a painless procedure that is easy on both the patient and the clinician. The treatment follows a thorough scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure, and can be carried out immediately or a few days later. When the photosensitizer is placed into the diseased pocket, a small amount may leak out. This liquid is not harmful if swallowed in these small quantities. Once the light diffuser is placed in the defect, the laser unit is activated and is either held in place or moved very slightly within the pocket.

No heat is generated, and there should be no pain for the patient during this short light activation procedure. Each laser treatment cycle is only 60 seconds, although deeper pockets may require a second or third treatment.

How Periowave™ works

Periowave™ is an effective, minimally invasive, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatment, characteristics that make it ideal for the treatment of gum disease.
Periowave™ uses the powerful photodisinfection reaction to inactivate the bacteria and toxins that are left behind after scaling and root planing.

Photodisinfection is based on a simple, two-step procedure:

Periowave Step 1: IrrigateFirst, a small quantity of blue-coloured photosensitizer solution is topically applied to the gums at the treatment site where it attaches to microbes and toxins associated with gum disease.

Periowave Step 2: IlluminateSecond, a thin, plastic light guide is painlessly placed into the treatment site. The light guide illuminates the treatment site with a specifically calibrated laser light, activating the photosensitizer solution and destroying bacteria beneath the gum line. Each treatment site requires only 60 seconds of laser activation, making it a quick, painless procedure.

Irrigate + Illuminate = Eradicate

Step 1: Irrigate
Thoroughly irrigate the periodontal pocket. Photosensitizing molecules preferentially bind with gram-negative periopathogens.

Step 2: Illuminate
Illuminate for 60 seconds.Reactive oxygen species kill bacteria and inactivate virulence factors.

The Periowave™ laser

Periowave™ lasers are optimally calibrated, delivering superior illumination at the correct wavelength for a potent photodynamic effect.

The need to deliver a specific wavelength of light into the small and often hard to reach confines of the periodontal defect requires highly specialized illumination. Using non-thermal laser diodes allows the light to be efficiently transmitted into the pocket without the potential for heat induced damage.

Periowave handheld laser (HHL-1000)Periowave™’s new handheld laser, the HHL-1000, brings cordless convenience to the powerful Periowave™ Photodisinfection System. Smaller and just as powerful, this inexpensive and extremely convenient device is symbolic of Periowave’s drive to make quality treatment more efficient and accessible for everyone.

The Treatment kits

Treatment kits come ready to use and are conveniently and safely packaged for single patient use.

Periowave™ Treatment Kits come in two sizes, large (2.0mL) and small (0.6mL), capable of treating up to 10 and 3 defects respectively. Each comes with a prefilled syringe, a blunt-end, side-exit 23 gauge canula, and a patented light diffusing tip. All kits are packaged for single use only, and should not be re-used, even on subsequent visits by the same patient.
Periowave™ is proud to launch the new Advanced Formulation photosensitizer into Canadian dental clinics. Featuring easier handling and a more viscous composition, Advanced Formulation also adds the lasting effect of chlorhexidine to improve efficacy and efficiency in the clinic.
